Uran’s great Raees and proudness of Kokani Nation Late Mohammed Ebrahim alias Bapu Sahab son of Late Mohammed Jaffer Tungekar’s (who’s Chelum is today) death has bring the whole Uran into darkness. He was not only famous in Kokan but his piousness was famous in India’s major cities. Uran is under the burden of his favors and kind heart and because of that we felt our duty to write a small book about his life that all kind hearted Muslims can read and get lesson from his life and in their heart they get the motivation to help their country, nation and religion.

Tungekar Family’s history starts from 1150 hijri (1737). A Shaikh Mulla Hussain Tungekar who build Uran’s first Jama Masjid in 1167 hijri (1754). His son Mohammed Ismail and Mohsmmed Ismail’s son Shaikh Mohammed Ibrahim and his son Mohammed Jaffer and Mohammed Jaffer’s son Mia Tungekar and his son Ghulam Hussain, who was the founder of Pilwari dargah, and his son Mohammed Jaffer, who build the current Masjid in 1319 hijri (1901), and his son whose death we are mourning today whose name is Mohammed Ebrahim alias Bapu Seth Tungekar.

Sad very sad, prince of princes, rich of the riches, follower of the religion of Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him), most respectable, most honorable Mr. Mohammed Ebrahim alias Bapu Seth sahab Tungekar was born on 26 Rabih alawal 1293 hijri (16th April 1876) in Uran’s Jaffer House. His father, who was a man of respect, was very happy on his birth and named him after his great great great grandfather Mohammed Ibrahim. He use to call him Bapu and that’s why he got famous by Bapu Sahab and Bapu Seth. When he was 9 years old and finished Holy Quran,

his father celebrated the gift occasion of the finishing of Holy Quran in grand fashion. When he was 10 years old he got married by his two elder brothers Late Ghulam Hussain and Mohammed Ismail Tungekar in 1303 hijri (1886). When he passed his 12th year of birth he started earning religious education. Teachers were hired to make him learn Marathy, English and Gujarati. When he was 25 years old he took over the Manglore businees house along with his brother Late Mohammet Ismail. Later he opened business houses in Calcutta, Rangoon, Colombo, Chat Gaoun Akyab, Cochin, Allapay, Calicut, etc.

He was blessed by Allah Almighty as his business spread and progressed on all fronts. On the death of his brother Late Mohammed Ismail and his father Late Mohammed Jaffer In 1322 hijri (1904) he got sole responsibilities of the family business. Below is the brief list of his well doing that he did in his life for the betterment of fellow human beings
1- For the purpose of good deeds for his late father he opened branches, in and around Uran, of religious and education school ‘Faiz Alaam’. For it 80,000 rupees worth property was donated.
2- For the purpose of good deeds for his father he made shelter for the fountain of Jama Masjid Uran.

3- In 1325 hijri (1907) on the occasion of his friend’s (Naeem Ahmed Haji Ali Bantwawala) daughter’s wedding in Bantwa (Kathiwar) he went there early and donated a lot to things to the needy and poor of that area.
4- In 1330 hijri (1912) when his elder brother Late Ghulam Hussain Sahab died and he became the caretaker of Jama Masjid Uran and other properties, he increased its wealth and property by better management.

5- In 1333 hijri (1915) he made a shelter at Hazrat Peer Samdani’s Mazar shareef (shrine).
6- In 1334 hijri (1916) when he went to Calcutta, he donated a large amount for charities.
7- In 1334 hijri (1916) for the purpose of good deeds for his late mother, he build a school by the name of ‘Bakeyat salehat Maryam’.
8- In 1335 hijri (1917) he donated 2500 rupees for the latest Masjid of Bombay’s Kazi Mohalla.
9- He built a Masjid in Pain (Kolaba district) in memory of Late Mohammed Yusuf Sahab.

10- Gave donation for a Masjid in Bahura near Uran.
11- Gave donation for a Masjid in Appta, Panvel.
12- Built a Masjid in Ali Bagh
13- Repaired the Masjid of Nagu Thana
14- Donated 1000 rupees for the Masjid of Jamily Mohalla in Bombay.
15- Gave donation to Widow’s fund of Jama Masjid Bombay
16- Gave donation to the scholarship fund of Anjuman-e-Islam of Kolaba.
17- Donated 400 rupees to Majlis Khair-al-Dareen Uran for the purpose of the service provided by them of the burial of dead people without relatives.
18- Donated 500 rupees for ghusala pupose.
19- Donated 3000 rupees for the building of a house for travelers by the Muslims of Uran.

20- Gave donation for ladies hospital in Dhoraji (Kathiwar)
21- Gave donation to the English school of Uran
22- Donated 1000 rupees to the maternity hospital of Ali Bagh
23- Donated 15000 rupees from time to time to the Islamic school, Ladies hospital, Mohamadan library, Anjuman himayat-e-Islam, burial of dead without relatives,etc fund of Bantwa city. Also a hall has been named after him in the ladies hospital and on the occasion of his Calcutta’s Manager Mohammed Haji Ghani’s son Mohammed Omar’s wedding he donated a big amount to the Orphanage of Bantwa city.
24- Donated 10000 rupees to Turkey fund during Balkan War and World War .
25- Printed book on ‘Shafae Maslak’ for kids by the name of ‘Ahkam Alislam’

26- Distributed for free a book on Prayers in Gujarati
27- Built the front area of Pilwari Dargah.
28- In 1344 hijri (1926) he donated a house worth 10000 rupees for the school ‘Faiz alaam’
29- In 1347 hijri (1929) when he went to Calcutta for the second time he donated 1000 rupees in Bangla starvation fund and 20000 rupees in other charities.
30- Donated during World war to the poor of Calicut, Cochin and Aalpay.
31- Gave donation to Uran water works.

32- In 1348 hijri (1930) his daughter dies and for the pupose of good deeds for his beloved daughter Maryam bibi he bought a Salt mine by the name of ‘Dandy’ for 3500 rupees and donated to charity work.
33- Donated 1000 rupees to the medical college of Late Hakeem Ajmal Khan in Delhi. Donated 500 rupees to the ladies hospital of Manglore and for this the hospital named a bed by his name.
34- In 1349 hijri (1931) he donated a fountain and tap by his wife’s name to Jama Masjid Uran.
35- Gave donation to the central school of Wahore, Kolaba district.
36- Gave donation of thousand of rupees annually to the government hospital of Uran. He was also the wise president and president of Municipality of Uran. In 1931-32 he was the wise president of Bombay’s Memon Merchants association.

37- He was the trusty of Late Sharifa Bai Jetekar charity
38- He was the trusty for life of Late Nakhuda Mohammed Ali Roghay trust

In 1920 Maharastra conference Mora (Uran) was held and he was the welcome committee’s president. When Khilafat and Congress movement’s non co-operation movement was passed he resigned from the honorary magistrate position. Lots of times he was asked to take the name of Khan Sahab and Khan Bahadur but he refused.

He was very kind and big hearted. He use to always help the needy and poor, Orphans and widows. He donated thousands of rupees from time to time to ‘Faiz Alaam’ school apart from the properties of his mother and brother Mohammed Yusuf. He gave gifts and scholarships to School’s children from time to time. He was so just that all rich and poor were the same for him. He always use to respect religious scholars and elders. He donated a lot for Hajj Masjid Al Haram and Visitors of Masjid-e-Nabawe.

He sent a lot of people for Hajj. If we write more about him even a book will not be enough. When he was 55 years old with Allah’s will he had a paralyses attack on Friday 6th of Ramadan near Friday prayers and after 2 days of illness he died and left this world at the night of 7th Ramadan 1351 hijri (15th January 1932). Ina-lillah-wa-ina-elaihe rajeoon. During illness and near death time he was reciting Kalma-e-Tayebba. His death caused sadness in Uran and Bombay and all the other places where he was known. After Ghusal his janaza was picked in a grand way. Apart from Muslims, people from other religions were also present in thousands. Around 1 pm he was buried.

Due to his death all business was closed in and around Uran. Lot of letters were received from respected people and friends. He left behind a widow, 5 daughters, 5 sons and 2 brothers. Last we would like to pray to almighty Allah to bless him and make his grave bright and flower it and keep it green and give him a place in Jannah and keep his brothers and children happy and keep them away from ill fate.
